The Holiday season and the tired mom.

Hey Mommies! Are you exhausted yet? I am. Somehow I decided to close on a home, maintain seeing clients during the busiest time of the year for mental health, plan a birthday party and try to attend all of the Christmas events.

What was I thinking?

Is this you right now? You are trying to do all of the things to make your kids happy and your family see how amazing you are as a mom. Though sometimes you feel like you are failing. These are some steps that I try to follow when I am getting the Christmas burn out.

  1. Prioritize my needs. Somehow we think we need to do everything all at once. Though when you can sit down and ask what is the biggest priority of the day it helps you to stay mindful about what is important for the day.  A lot of times our mind is far in the future and we are unable to focus on what is in front of us. If you ask yourself what is the biggest priority today it might be one or two things and then you can go the next day and ask yourself the same question.
  2. Teach my kid the meaning of this time of the year. Sometimes the meaning of Christmas can be hidden with all of the gifts and pretty tinsel. Though it is important to help your kids understand why this time of the year is important. For each family it might be different. Some mommies might talk about Christmas in terms of religion and some might talk about the importance of giving. Regardless both moms are giving value to this time of year to their kids. Your kids will remember those lessons for the rest of their life.
  3. Do something for myself. During this time of year you might forget the most important person: YOU. You are the one organizing for the family, shopping for food and making or buying Christmas cookies. The main person that is doing all these activities are you, so you want to make sure you are mentally and physically well. You are not able to do these activities if you are tired and exhausted. It is time to schedule a manicure for yourself or you might ask to have a few minutes to yourself. It does not matter what you chose just make sure you remember that when you do more for yourself you can do more for others.

Hopefully this inspires you to take a moment to try something different this holiday season. Stay tuned for more tips from The Mommy Consultant!
